Raising chickens in carnivore country can be challenging, as traditional chicken coops can be breached by predators. To keep grizzly bears from developing this potentially fatal habit, we have designed and deployed predator-resistant chicken coops, or ‘chicken tractors,’ to small farming operations that raise free-range chickens. The tractors are fully enclosed and surrounded by electric fences to deter bears and other animals from getting to the chickens. They’re also portable so that they can be moved around the yard or pasture. People and Carnivores has a long history of developing and testing new coexistence tools to be sure they'll be effective in the field. After field testing this unique fencing system, we deployed multiple chicken tractors in the field and plan to continue using them as an effective method of coexistence in places where carnivores and chicken farmers share the land. This is a video caught by one of our trail cameras of a grizzly bear attempting to get inside of our chicken tractor.
